Don't Be Afraid to be Amazing
“Don’t
Be Afraid to be Amazing” will be held on Friday, May 30,
from 1:00 – 4:00 pm in McMillen Hall, Room 213 with Andy
Offutt Irwin, Master Storyteller-Comedian-Musician and
Undeniably Awesome, as the presenter. With a silly putty
voice, hilarious heart-filled stories, and arguably the
greatest whistle in the world, Andy is equal parts
mischievous schoolboy and the Marx Brothers, peppered with a
touch of the Southern balladeer. Andy is one vibrantly odd
bird, with feathers that tease, tickle and tug at the heart
and his whopper of a personality barely fits into most
rooms. People are drawn to him like magnets to a
refrigerator – and inside, it’s all Mountain Dew and Jolt
Cola!
.
Andy and the participants explore humor and theatrical
comedy as it is used in storytelling. Being funny is more
than just about being “silly” or “whacky.” Andy will give a
brief overview of comedy theory (yes, it exists) and will
explore how humor can be used as a vehicle to express all
kinds of emotions, how
incongruities in even tragic events can give
attention the human condition, accentuate a sense of pathos,
and bring understanding. Be ready to laugh and take comedy
seriously.
Starting Out Telling Personal and
Family Stories
How can I be a
storyteller? Do I have to write and memorize every word?
Does everything I say have to be factual? How can I make
characters out of people from my past? These are questions a
beginning storyteller might ask. Andy and the participants
will explore these and other questions. Andy will help
would-be tellers with tools to capture, keep, and tell
family and personal stories.
